Paradise, Skyline Trail Loop: Mt. Rainier National Park
Summertime in Mt. Rainier National Park is one of the most breathtaking places in the Pacific Northwest. The 5.5-mile Skyline Trail Loop is one of the hardest hikes I’ve been on so far, but so rewarding once you hit the top (after a 1450 ft elevation gain, of course).
The views around this mountain are some of the best Washington has to give during the summer. The Cascades make up the horizon all around and you may have the opportunity to see Mt. Rainier next to you on a clear day.
Research beforehand was filled with opinions on which direction to hike this loop trail, as you can hike both clockwise or counterclockwise. We hiked up clockwise, which had a steep incline up, but I would choose to go this way again as the way down on the other side was a bit easier on the knees.
Outside of the skyline, the wildlife and nature was a beautiful sight. Be prepared to see, and hear, the marmots that inhabit the mountain. There is a beauty to this mountain that many Washingtonians connect with, and if you get the chance, don’t miss out on visiting.
I will note that, as of this year, the park now requires timed entry reservations for the summer of 2024. So, if you are planning to take a trip there, make sure to plan ahead!
